Not sure if you have your wisdom teeth?
Third molars or more commonly known as wisdom teeth typically emerge into the mouth anywhere between 18-25 years of age, however this is not always the case. Some individuals may not have any wisdom teeth, these may be the lucky ones, because having wisdom teeth can sometimes cause an array of problems.
Problems wisdom teeth may cause:
- Erupting horizontally/sideways
- Irritation/Infection/pain to surrounding gum
- Irritation to opposing gum (when there is no opposing tooth)
- Cyst
- Crowding
- Can cause damage to adjacent teeth
- Erosion lesion
- Decay due to harbouring of bacteria
- Gum disease between the 2 teeth
- Can cause damage to adjacent teeth
- Impingement on your ability to maintain good oral hygiene
Due to these problems listed above, it is a common recommendation to have wisdom teeth removed. There are some cases, where other treatment options, such as a filling, may be feasible, however this is not generally recommended, unless you can maintain good oral hygiene at home, every day. If this is the case for you, then we will recommend coming in for your 6 monthly check ups and cleans at Bondi Family Dental Surgery, to ensure there are no changes or worsening of the situation.
